Post-surgical Evaluation and Continuing Care

The Yale Cardiac Surgery clinical team is available to answer any questions the patient may have directly following their hospital discharge. Four weeks after surgery, patients visit the Yale Physicians’ Building to meet with the surgeon and the clinical nurse coordinator.  Here an evaluation is done that includes a chest x-ray, an EKG (electrocardiogram), and a physical including a wound check. Any remaining sutures are removed at this time. Recommendations for the future and any remaining questions are discussed at this time.

Continuing Care

Patients who have undergone aortic surgery will be scheduled to have a CT (chest tomography) scan taken about one month after the post-surgical evaluation.  Annual or bi-annual visits are scheduled to monitor the aorta for the rest of the patient’s life.
